LabEx 2008 Last Posting (Probably)

I just want to thank all the students that came to LabEx this year. I know that some of you came only because you were forced to but I think everyone found something this year that made them interested in what we were doing. I hope you all have good memories of LabEx.

LabEx is only possible because each year Atlantic Baptist University steps in and supports the vision that we had ten years ago to provide homeschooled and Christian Schooled high school students with an opportunity to work in a science laboratory before they graduate. Most years ABU provides more than half the financial support for the program with the remainder provided by the tuition that students pay.

But none of this would be possible without the capable, faithful and irrational voluntary work by a group of instructors. This year we were blessed with a great group of instructors.

Sebastien has worked at ABU for a couple of years and has a BSc and MSc in Chemistry. He very capably led the Chemistry lab section while I was in Nova Scotia for a conference. Sebastien is in the foreground of the photo below while Chris in the background feigns intense interest in oxygen testing.

The Biology section was led by Trevor who has both a BSc and a BEd. In this photo he demonstrates how the eensy-weensy spider crept up the waterspout.

And finally Chris and Julie were our volunteer "crack fillers". Both Chris and Julie have BSc degrees. They attended all the labs and provided support where they were needed, pretty much anything from suggesting the best way to cut open a frog to application of the equation y = mx to copper absorbance data. They also led the Biology field team when Trevor had to go work at his "real job". Here they are in the background of the photo below with Anna and from the smiles I would guess they are engaged in their favorite pastime of terrifying potential undergraduates with "Dr. Mel stories".

It was great to work with you all and I appreciate your willingness to help. I am in your debt in ways greater than I can say. Thank-you.
